The past year was a transformative and exciting year here at EnviroFriendly Lawn Care. Until the fall of 2010 we were a completely human powered and organic lawn care company operating in Ft Collins, Colorado. We had been toying with the idea of offering an electric component to our business so that we could be more competitive and have the ability to take on more acreage and more residential/commercial clients.

We tested out the idea with our existing clients and then purchased an electric line trimmer first. The savings in time more than paid for the new piece of equipement in less than a month.

As fall progressed we decided to purchase an electric blower in order to speed up fall clean up of leaves. We were reluctant to even entertain this idea at first given the fact that our clients love that we are SO quiet. But, after looking into this we found an electric blower that was strong but very quiet, so we purchased and began testing it to see the overall results.

Fall clean up has always been a real time consumer as doing everything by hand means taking alot more time to finish a job and therefore not make much money in the end. Cleaning out mulched beds is extremely difficult and very time consuming. With the new blower we were able to do more jobs and much more quickly.

So, we have decided to offer two components to our business now, human powered and human powered plus electric. The human powered lawn care will cost 40% more than the combined human and electric lawn care. So, a lawn that cost $25 last year to maintain will still cost that amount if done via human and electric but will cost $35 if done 100% human powered.

We are still going to mow using push reel mowers and the only equipement we will use that is not human powered will be the electric line trimmer and blower. We will use solar panels on our bike trailers to charge the batteries between jobs so that we get our power from the sun rather than a coal plant.

We are very excited that by offering this additional component to our business we can substanially grow our business and convert more people to a more sustainable way of doing lawn care.

At EnviroFriendly Lawn Care we are always striving to reduce our impact one lawn at a time. We have done this through using using bicycles with trailers to haul our equipment and debris and by using push reel mowers, manual rotary edgers, rakes and brooms. We currently have four mowers, of those, three were bought used and refurbished. Our new electric equipement is charged using solar panels rather than grid power.

We use organic fertilizers and soil amendments and make our own organic compost and compost tea. We also try to eliminate all paper by offering online bill pay and advertise online as much as possible. We use 100% recycled paper in our door hangers, business cards, flyers and invoices for those customers who don't pay online.

We switched all of our lighting in the office to CFLs, we compost waste and reuse where ever possible. Our haul trailer was made from the remains of a throwaway bike trailer and wood and PVC found in a dumpster. We have three types of composting that we perform: bin type, cone type and tumbler. The bin type was made from wood pallets and throw away lumber. The cone type was given to us by the city through the Spring Creek Gardens pilot program. The last and most recent addition is the compost tumbler. We made the tumbler using a 55 gallon poly drum that was used previously for water and hardware and lumber from the Resource here in Ft Collins. We are in the process of making more of them to sell but will only be available here locally as they are too heavy to ship.

We are always trying to find new ways to reduce our impact and welcome any and all suggestions you have.
